White Stars as Mids Celebrate Outstanding Hill Climb Season
Mid Shropshire Wheelers brought the curtain down on one of their most successful SCCA Hill Climb campaigns with another impressive showing in the final round of the bbr Opticians-sponsored series, held on a new course near Oswestry.
Promoted by Dave Scott Coaching, the season finale on Old Racecourse Road attracted the largest field of the series, with 36 riders tackling the climb, including seven representing the Mids.
Leading the charge was Jude White, who produced a superb ride to claim third place overall and fastest Junior, stopping the clock in 6 minutes 59 seconds.
Fellow Junior Bryn Nelson, who had already secured the overall Junior series title with three rounds remaining, continued his excellent season with another top-ten finish. His time of 7:47 earned him tenth overall and second Junior on the day.
The Mids’ strength in depth was evident throughout the results, with Matthew Barrett finishing 12th in 7:56, closely followed by William Carlyle in 13th with 8:11.
There was nothing to separate Joe Holton and Monty Kynaston, who recorded identical times of 8:44 to share 21st place, with Kynaston also claiming third in the Junior category.
Completing the Mids contingent was Flo Parkinson, whose 12:18 placed her 35th overall. Having contested seven rounds of the championship, Parkinson’s commitment throughout the season would be rewarded in the final series standings.
A season to remember for the Mids
With the final points calculated, Mid Shropshire Wheelers can reflect on an exceptional campaign that underlines the club’s growing strength in the discipline, particularly among its younger riders.
An impressive 21 Mids riders competed across the eleven-round series, with established competitors joined by several newcomers taking their first steps into the demanding world of hill climbing.
Three riders secured top-ten finishes in the overall series standings, with Matthew Barrett, William Carlyle and Junior champion Bryn Nelson all featuring among the leading contenders.
Perhaps the most encouraging statistic of the season was the club’s remarkable representation in the Junior category. Of the ten Juniors who contested the series, eight were Mid Shropshire Wheelers riders, an outstanding indication of the young talent coming through the club.
And there was silverware to celebrate!
Bryn Nelson completed a dominant Junior campaign, having wrapped up the series title as early as Round 8 at Ludlow, while Flo Parkinson secured a superb double bronze, finishing third in both the Female and Junior series classifications.
For a club with a strong tradition of developing young cyclists, the performances throughout the autumn offer plenty of encouragement for the seasons ahead.
From White’s podium finish in the final round to Nelson’s championship success and Parkinson’s double medal achievement, the Mids have certainly made their mark on the Shropshire hill climbing scene in 2026.
Congratulations to everyone who pulled on a Mids jersey and took on the climbs this season!
