*** RESULTS/RACE REPORTS *** Mid-Shropshire Wheelers:
Race Report by Mick Ward (17th July 2008): Last weekend saw several MSW riders competing in the Ludlow CC “10” on the fast Brimfield course.
On a day with a strong South Westerly wind and intermittent heavy rain, there were some excellent performances and a clutch of personal bests with Ian Coupland producing the fastest ride of the MSW contingent and beating his previous PB by 17 seconds with an excellent time of 22.42, next was the fast improving Dave York who also produced a PB with a super ride of 24.05.
As expected the MSW super veteran Dennis Milsom produced another scintillating ride finishing in 24-12 and taking the vets on standard award with a plus of 10mins 47 seconds, with fellow team mate Dave Nicholas gaining 3rd in the vets on standard award with a plus of 6 mins 36 secs and an actual time of 24.39. Ron Ball was another to achieve a PB with a fast ride of 24.16, while Paul Charlesworth also produced a fast ride and a PB with a fast time of 26.29.
A real battle ensued among the MSW ladies with Jenny York surprising team mate Julie Moore with a superb ride and knocking 46 seconds off her PB to finish with a time of 24.53 and gaining first place, Julie was also delighted with her ride in a time of 25.14 improving her PB by 12 seconds, while Denise Hazelwood also produced a good ride finishing in a time of 28.38.
The winner was Wrekinsport’s fast man Andy Bason with an incredible time of 20.24.
The following day 8 MSW riders rode the North Shropshire Wheelers “25” on the Prees-Market Drayton course and on a wet and windy day there were some sterling performances with Ian Coupland taking pride of place with another PB and an excellent ride to finish just 14 seconds from going under the hour with a time of 1-00-13, whilst Tim Jones making a rare Time Trial appearance produced a PB with an excellent time of 1-04-25.
Veteran Dennis Milsom somehow found the legs after his previous day’s performance to produce another fine ride with a time of 1-04-37 giving him a plus of 24-08 sufficient to win the vets on standard award.
Dave York and Ron Ball also produced spirited performances with time of 1-05-29 and 1-06-37 respectively whilst Brian Morris battled it out to finish in a time of 1-11-36 edging out fellow team mate Paul Charlesworth by 50 seconds.
Jenny York lowered her PB finishing with a time of 1-07-46 and taking 3rd position in the ladies event.
Race Report by Mick Ward (1st July 2008): Mids Superveteran Dennis Milsom travelled to Hampshire and rode the Bournemuth Jubilee Wheelers “10” Mile event and came a way with a National age related record with a superb ride in a time of 23-39 well inside the 25-09 that he had to beat.
Three MSW rode the west Cheshire TTCA “10” on the fast Pulford based course in Cheshire. On a cool and wet evening with a south westerly wind making it hard going to the turn, all three were please with their rides. Fastest was Dennis Milsom who couldn’t quite emulate his previous weekend performance but still did a superb ride to finish in a time of 24-22, narrowly beating Dave Nicholas by 18 seconds, whilst Mick Ward posted his fastest 10 of the season finishing in a time of 25-40. The event was won by Nigel Haigh of Sportscover-SPLUK- JEJA in a fast time of 21-03.
On the local Time Trial Scene, 5 MSW riders competed in the midweek SCCA 30 Mile event and on a hard night with a telling westerly wind several of them produced excellent performances. Fastest of the quintet was the fast improving York family with Dave who came in with an excellent time of 1-20-15 narrowly beating clubmate Ron Ball by 20 seconds, and his wife Jenny who did a superb ride in 1-21-23 to take the women’s prize.
Veteran Mick Ward, despite having gear problems was less than happy with his ride, finishing in a time of 1-25-53 whilst Paul Charlesworth who has plenty of stamina is still looking to find some speed after finishing with a time of 1-29-05. Mick Ward was the only MSW rider competing in The Rhyl CC 25 Mile promotion on the St-Asaph-Abergele circuit and on a cool morning with a westerly cross wind both helping and hindering in places, he made up for the midweek disappointment in the SCCA 30 by achieving his best time this season of 1-04-59, the winner was David Crawley –Fibrax Wrexham in a fast time of 55-03.
Last weeks saw the annual 2-up instead of the evening 10 series with the Pete Francis 2-up trophy for grabs. On a reasonable evening with 14 pairs randomly chosen who were competing on a 16 mile circuit starting at the Hare & Hounds and including the A5, Halfway House-Westbury-Yockleton –Nox and finishing back near the start. The battle for the trophy was intense with Shane Moore & Carl Huntley edging out Ron Ball & young Alex Webb by 5 seconds in returning a fast time of 41-13 to take the honours. Third after another battle were Andy Barton & Dave Mellor in a time of 42-41 edging out Liz Salisbury and young Luke Grivell-Mellor by just 4 seconds.
On the Road Race scene, congratulations should given to the MSW Tim Jones, when riding in the recent Wolverhampton Wheelers promotion at the Sundorne track in the 3rd /4th Category event he put in a powerful sprint at the finish to gain10th position overall, giving him the one point he needed to move up from a 4th to a 3rd Category.
In the under 16’s event Rachel Jones was the fastest girl in the event and Chris Williamson and Alex Webb finishing 5th and 6th respectively, whilst in the Under 14 race Hollie George came in as second girl, whilst George Rowlands finished 14th.
In the under 12’s event Joe Webb put in a good performance in a strong field to finish 6th, whilst 4 other MSW were placed 14th to 17th respectively.
