Triathlon

The club is affiliated to British Triathlon.

Therefore if you are a club member you save £10 on joining British Triathlon. (So if you are triathlete it effectively cost you nothing to be a member of the club if you subscription is £10.00).

Our triathlete members between them probably have very good knowledge of all local events (Sprints and Olympic distance). The local season seems to commence with Chirk in April and finish with Ludlow in September. Ellesmere Olympic is a popular event as is Bala.

Some club members have competed at Ironman distance.

There is a quite a lot of cross over in Shrewsbury with cyclists, runners and swimmers trying triathlons but being initially weak in a discipline and needing some training. You often see familiar faces riding a club time trial, out with Shropshire Shufflers or swimming with Shrewsbury Masters.

British Triathlon listed event details can be found on the British Triathlon website <West Midlands region > <search for events>

The club has not as yet run a triathlon - but may possibly do so in the future.

For local training the following is suggested:

Bike

Thursday track sessions <guide>

This is great for bike handling skills and gets you used to riding at a good speed on your bike.

Tuesday evening 10 mile time trials <more info > <guide>

Great to monitor you improvement over the summer and simulates the common sort of Sprint bike distance.

Swim

If you don't already go to Shrewsbury Masters based at the Quarry Pool in Shrewsbury then you should.

Phil is a great coach who finds cyclists swimming techniques very interesting at first - and he has helped quite a few of us along.

In particular the Wednesday evening sessions at 8.00pm are recommended as great for beginners and Saturday morning sessions at 8.30 are good for distance training.

If you want to know more contact Greg Waldron, Eric Stannard or Rob Jones as we regularly go along.

Run

The Shropshire Shufflers run very popular coaching sessions throughout the week in mixed ability groups.

Monday night at 7.00pm is usually an excellent hour session to start the week.

Equipment

For very good advice on equipment locally speak to Rob Jones (club member) who works at Dave Mellor's Bike Shop.
